Experimenting with Rhino: Design Your Own Castle
My first assignment for CAD and Digital Fabrication was to design a castle using the program Rhino. I came into this class with no CAD program experience so I was very intimidated by the prospect of designing a castle in a week using a program I was completely unfamiliar with. This assignment gave me freedom to explore Rhino and its tools and develop some basic knowledge of the program.
Here are photos of my finished castle in the rendered view settings. I improvised a lot in constructing the castle. I used commands and other functions I found clicking around such as ExtrudeCrv, Rotate, Mirror, Cap, Lock, Unlock, and Gumball. |
These two renderings show what my castle looked like while I was working on it. I stayed primarily in the perspective box and kept the view setting on shaded. My structure looked like the picture on the left for the majority of the process and slowly became grey from me locking my shapes together. |
I like these angles of the castle that make the castle look monumental. From these angles it is hard to tell there are a lot of discrepancies with the symmetry of the structure. As much as I used the mirror function and kept Gridsnap on I still struggled to place my shapes exactly where I wanted. |
Despite my struggles I had a lot of fun getting to know Rhino and designing this castle. I included some texture and height in the ways I could. I anticipate coming back and building another castle at the end of the semester to exercise all the skills I acquire. |
I like the mix between futuristic and classical design.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all for having no prior experience to this program your castle looks amazing! I really enjoyed how you've made a lot of different sections and details to the castle.
ReplyDeletethere are elements that make me think of mosques and also the buttresses of the Notre Dame in Paris. the final render is a compelling blend
ReplyDeleteIts amazing how you came into this with no prior experience, your castle definitely doesn't look like it was made by a beginner
ReplyDeleteNailed it! This is incredible.
ReplyDeleteThis castle is amazing! You really put a lot of time into learning all the tools that were new to you and it paid off!
ReplyDeleteThere is so much to see. I didn't know where to start at first - but once I did it was really rewarding to explore.
ReplyDeleteWonderful arch generation!
ReplyDeletejust amazing. great job!
